Don't fall for Mr. Hotshot

Updated: May 16, 2020

NO! It is not because we are working with a “super hot” Developer or we are seated near a “super handsome” Architect; Summer season has definitely arrived and it plans to stay a bit longer than usual (foretasted to extend until end of May) thus the increase of heat index in Manila. If the environment is too hot, it doesn’t just make you uncomfortable, it can also be deadly. We may develop what they call exhaustion or “ Classic Heat stroke”

This classic heat stroke or shall we call him, “Mr. Hotshot”, usually results from too much exposure to high temperature. Like any other Hot shot guy, it surely knows how to move smoothly, having slow onset and developing over days. This is usually accompanied by dehydration, throbbing headache, sometimes vomiting, weakness of muscle (malaise) and disorientation.

Enough of the life threatening symptoms and let’s move to the “flip side” of the story. Heat stroke can be fatal but it can easily be prevented than treated. Prevention is always better than cure. Here are several tips on how we can save ourselves in falling for “Mr. Hot shot”:

1. WATER kills fire Need I say more? Water does not only rehydrates, It balances the body's homeostasis, weight and functioning. If your body starts to react to environmental heat, avoid coffee, soda or alcohol as these lead to dehydration.

2. INSIDE rather than outside Unless needed, stay inside your home. BUT, make sure you have proper ventilation. If you really need to go out, use an umbrella, cap or sunglasses.

3. LESS is more

Wear loose-fitting, breathable and lightweight clothes. Besides, it's summer, show off those toned muscles!

4. Find the perfect TIME Avoid working, moving or exercising during the hottest time of the day. The lesser the brain and body is used, the better.

5. Lastly, stop OVERTHINKING Studies show how anxiety causes a shoot up of hormones and physical symptoms that triggers your fight or flight system (this means muscle tensing and asking your heart to pump faster than usual) that might add up to the heat index of your body. Nothing more today but just, Take it easy!
